MIC CHECK

This part of the site is for anyone out there who would like to step up to the mic with a profound thought, request or observation that they would like to share with the entirety of HipHop.

For example, What do we think about making it that a Beat Boxer is synonymous with being a producer..? Hear me out. We all know that the original Elements pertain to Emceein’, DeeJayin’, Breakin’ & Graffiti. That means the Producer isn’t represented as an Element, but should be. Being a DeeJay is an entire separate skill set than being a Producer. Plus there’s the discussion of the difference between a Producer versus Executive Producer. Since the Producer is the evolution of the beat provider, it just kinda makes a little sense. I don’t know, you tell me what you think.

How do we feel about using the word Microphonist to refer to all MCs & Rappers..? Defining the difference between the two obviously leads to some feeling slighted for being called just a Rapper. We can create a neutral term we all agree on. Microphonist, simply to mean anyone who spits rhymes into a mic for a living. All levels of skill, quality & content are included. In the effort to unify a craft & embrace every branch, we’ll solve this with scholarship. I think the first time we heard this word was from the legendary Rakim on My Melody. We also heard J. Dilla use it on the Thelonius track. Many of us use it already. I just thought it’ll be cool to start using it & magnify our greatness. I don’t know, you tell me what you think.
